Our thoughts lately have reflected on the clients that we have gotten to know through this process. From an outsider perspective, that first appointment with someone who is in preforeclosure can be heartbreaking. Everyone we meet with has a unique story that usually begins with the excitement they felt as they inserted the key into the keyhole and turned the lock to their front door for the first time. They often reflect on their excitement as they were as they lay down to sleep that first night and how the newness that surrounded them kept them awake. They often recount their first family event, dinner party, or holiday gathering they held in the home. With sadness in their voices, they tell us how their home used to be a place of happiness and how it now feels like a prison.
Often, they tell of the little things that cause them to feel emotions such as anxiety and depression or feel stress while they are in preforeclosure; little things such as the smell of their mail, the sound their mailbox makes as they open it, the ringtone on their phone, or a knock at the door. Since they have no longer been able to afford the home, the emotions associated with losing it to foreclosure feel like more than they can bear. Many counselors and psychologists now rank the loss of a home as the number one stressful life event, above death of a spouse, permanent loss of health and divorce. Though the reasons why this is the case vary, they all relate back to a person’s need to support those in his/her care and the uncertainty of the outcome.
Once we put their home through our process, our clients report that they feel less stress, they no longer feel their heart race when they hear a knock on the door or the phone ring, they no longer detest going to the mailbox and they feel at peace, once again. During the time that we have worked with them, they have been able to find another place to live and have their family back on the road to financial and emotional health.
